    52Books-May

In case you were wondering, we are still going strong with the 52 Books In 2016 Challenge.  This May book wrap-up would have been up sooner if I hadn’t misplaced the notebook I was using to keep track of our reads.  No worries, a little Summer decluttering helped me to find it buried underneath a pile of papers and coupons.  May was a very good reading month for us with a total of 62 books read for the month.

Check out the books we read along with our fave picks below.  You can find our April recap here in case you missed it last month.  Here’s to hoping you’ll find some reads from our list to share with your family over the Summer!

    May Faves

Falling For Autumn by Sherelle Green

This book was an awesome read.  I love a strong-willed heroine.  She’s independent, doesn’t take any mess and calls her own shots.  Autumn was definitely all of those those things.  Also, I loved this story because it was nice to see how her character grew and finally allowed herself to become vulnerable.

Axel the Truck: Beach Race by J. D. Riley

JJ loved this book because it reminded him of Blaze and the Monster Machines.  Aside from trains, he’s also really into cars.  This book was such a cute and easy read.  Perfect for beginner readers.

Hello Kitty: A Day of Thanks

Yes, we read a book about Thanksgiving in May.  It was Hello Kitty and Moo just had to have it.  She read it twice!  Gotta love a child that is easy to please, at least when it comes to books.

Wicked Sexy Liar by Christina Lauren

OMG!  Christina Lauren did it again.  This book was amazing and I couldn’t put it down.  If you’re a fan of sexy contemporary romance novels with real characters that will suck you in and give you ALL. THE. FEELS, check out this book or really any book written by this BFF duo.

    What We’re Reading This Month

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J.  Maas

I have heard so many great things about this book and its author.  Seriously I think all of my favorite book bloggers and Booktubers have read this book and they gave it over four stars.  I can’t wait to get reintroduced to YA (Young Adult) fiction and Fantasy.

    Wizard by Jack Prelutsky

This is a children’s book, but when I saw it the illustrations reminded me of Harry Potter.  My family will tell you that I stan HARD as you know what for Harry Potter and J. K. Rowling.  I can’t wait to read this with the kids because I know they will appreciate the illustrations as well.  Moo already asked if it was a Harry Potter book for kids and it made my heart so proud.  The Harry Potter love will live on through her.  Finally I have someone to whom I can gift my HP books in my will.

Whelp, we’ve read a total of 265 books for the year so far!  Last month I bumped our goal from 150 to 300-500, but seeing as we’re only 35 books away from hitting 300, I’m officially moving our family reading goal to 600 books read for 2016.  Let’s hope that the library has 300 books we haven’t read yet. I’m on a ban from buying books from the bookstore until we can find sturdy bookshelves to replace the two my heavy book collection broke. *insert sad face*

However, thanks to my friends at Faith Words (Hachette Book Group), Random House, Harlequin and Kensington, my Kindle and night stand will full of adult reads all Summer long!  Yay!  This frees us up the money I would normally spend at Barnes and Noble or Target to go towards more ebooks and my real bookshelves fund.  If any of my fellow booknerdigans have any recommendations on where I can get some really sturdy bookshelves without breaking the bank (i.e.-$100 or less) let me know in the comments.  Most of my books are 350 pages or more and I like to stack my books two rows deep.  So I need some sturdy shelves folks.

What has been your favorite read so far this year?

  • Thankful Thursday

    Thankful Thursday

Happy Thankful Thursday!  This week in the YUMMommy household was rather uneventful, but I’m grateful.  The heat has been unrelenting and we’ve been staying indoors to keep cool.  Well, except for Monday when we went to the pool.  Speaking of which this week I’m thankful that Moo has overcome her fear of going out into the pool.  For years the farthest we could get her to go in a pool where the steps.

That was totally fine for me because that meant I only had to help one kid battle around the pool- JJ.  It’s so weird seeing how they have swapped roles with each other.  When Moo was a baby she loved water.  Bathtime was her favorite time of the day, while JJ was NOT a fan of water at all until he hit age four.  Now, he’s a water lover and she’s not.  But she surprised me Monday and asked me to take her paddling around the deep end of the pool.

She did great a job.  I’m looking into our budget to see if we can move some funds around to pay for family swimming lessons.  The Mr already knows how to swim, but doesn’t because he’s not a fan of public or community pools.  So maybe he’ll tag along for a refresher if we do take some.   Swimming lessons would really help to boost Moo’s courage about being in the water and would give me a peace of mind about JJ’s enthusiasm for water.

I’m thankful for all of the Booktubers and blog bloggers that have been raving about Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Throne and Roses.  I read a few pages in the library and can’t wait to fully engross myself into it this weekend.  But from what I did read, I know that I’m going to love this Beauty and the Beast fantasy-style retelling.  I feel like it’s been so long since I’ve read a good YA (young adult) series.  I probably stopped reading YA after the last Twilight book, speaking of which I heard there’s a new addition to the series that was recently released.

Earlier this week I had a bit of writer’s block and didn’t get much added to my novels.  Today my characters have been busy chattering away in my head.  Scenes have been coming and going.  I can’t wait to write them all and move these stories forward.  I’m thankful that I’ve learned to respect MY writing process more and have come to terms with the fact that I’m just not a fast writer.  And I don’t want to be.  At least not with my first debut projects.

Lastly, I’m thankful that Moo continues to make new friends everywhere she goes- the library, the park, etc.  Her light definitely shines bright and serves as beacon to draw others to her.  I hope that light never goes out and that she will find a greater purpose to use her light and voice for.

What are you giving thanks for this week?

  • Our 2016 Summer Break Bucket List

One week.  That’s how long we’ve been on Summer Break as a family.  It feels strange considering most of my family and close friends have been on break since the middle and/or end of May.  Don’t love schools that get out late?  Not I.  Anyways, we spent our first week just relaxing, sleeping in and really not having any rhyme or rhythm as to what we wanted to do, but I’ve decided that we need to experience a few adventures.

You know, have some actual planned activities.   Sure it’s nice to sleep in and we’re enjoying the flexible to come and go as we please immensely.  However, I don’t sleeping in, watching tv and doing nothing to be ALL that we do this summer.  So with a little input from the kids below is our 2016 Summer Break bucket list.

    Our Summer Break Bucket List

    • Go to the beach:  We haven’t been to the beach in ages, which is pretty awful considering my brother lives at the beach.  The kids have been asking when they will get to see Uncle Lenny since they haven’t seen him this year.  Talk about crazy!  Plus, JJ hasn’t been on an actual beach like sand, seashells and the wide open ocean since he was in my womb.  I’m sucking it up and taking the four drive to hang out with my brother and catch some rays (with sunblock of course, I sun burn).
    • Visit a friend: Now that we are officially a two car household, there’s no excuse to not visit one of my best friends.  She lives a little under 3 hours from me and we’ve been trying to connect in person for a year.  However, the timing was never right, she was either sick when I could use the Mr’s car and then there was that time she came all the way to the Queen City, but the kids and I had the stomach virus.  The stars have finally aligned and I can’t wait to hang out with her and her little cutie!
    • Have a cookout:  Three years.  I haven’t grilled outdoors in three years y’all!  This is nuts because I’m the griller in my family.  I’ve gone from grilling out year round to not grilling since our grill got stolen three years ago.  Whelp, it times to blow that dust off my grilling skills and there’s no better time than this Summer to start testing out new burger recipes.
    • Join a book club:  Y’all already know that my love of books knows no limits.  I’m the woman who has so many books, I broke two bookshelves because they just couldn’t hold the weight of my books.  I’ve passed my passion for books and words on to Moo and she’s been asking to join a kiddie book club.  Likewise I’m wanting to join an adult book club so that I can get my fangirl on with other book nerds.
    • See a waterfall:  We were watching a movie a few weeks ago and Moo asked me if I’ve ever seen a waterfall.  Of course I have because we have a small one in my hometown.  It dawned on me that aside from TV and pictures my kids have never seen a waterfall.  So we’re rectifying this situation before school starts back.
    • Hike/walk a nature trail:  I think we’ll be doing more walking than hiking.  My kids can be a bit unsturdy on their feet.  So we’re going to walk at least three of the numerous trails we have here in the Queen City.  I feel blessed to have all the advancements of city living, but the comforts of country life as well.  Not many cities offer both.  I would like hike a more advanced trail sans the kids before September tho.
    • Build a sandcastle:  We’ve always been so unprepared on our trips to the sandbox.  Two weeks ago I finally invested in some pails and shovels for the kids and this week we’re going to complete our sandcastle building toolboxes by adding a few sandcastle molds to our collection.  Then we’re going to schedule a day to get up early, head to our favorite park with the good moldable sand and build until our hearts are content!
    • Visit the Farmer’s Market:  When I was a kid, my mom would take us to the farmer’s market almost every Saturday and sometimes on Sunday.  I want to start up this tradition with my kids.  We’ve only been to one of our farmer’s markets and that was a few year ago when JJ was still able to ride comfortable in a stroller and was still breastfeeding.
    • Have a bubble party:  Who doesn’t love bubbles?  JJ’s former speech therapist used bubbles as part of his therapy to help him open up and get comfortable.  So bubbles will always have special meaning for our family and be a part of his story.  Why not get a few gallons of bubble mixer, a bubble machine and just go crazy?!
    • Decorate t-shirts: Moo’s class was supposed to tie dye t-shirts the last week of school, but they never got around to it.  So we’re adding it to our list and JJ can join in on the fun.  This will be another first for them because they’ve never tie dyed anything before.
    • Watch the sun set:  A few nights ago we drove around to get a good view of the Strawberry Moon.  The kids loved it.  So I think hanging out at one of our local parks and enjoying the sun set will be equally enjoyable.  I love that my kids love nature and the beauty of God’s creations.
    • Attend an outdoor movie:  This is something I’ve personally wanted to do since I was a kid.  Now that I have kids, I get to mark this first off my list and theirs.  Two birds, one stone. Kinda of.
    • Host a family game night:  Not just any family game night either.  I’m talking about the ultimate family game night with Grandma, Auntie Cat, and Cousin O!  Scrabble, Connect 4 and UNO are just a few of the games we’ll play.  We’ll have everyone’s favorite snacks and maybe even end the night with a movie- Zootopia.
    • Keep a Summer journal:  What better way to keep track of our Summer adventures than through a journal.  Mine will more than likely be a combination of pictures, video and writing.  Also, I’ll be sharing our adventures here on the blog as well.  This will also be a good way to help Moo keep up her writing skills and help JJ get better with his handwriting and started on learning how to spell.
    • Read 100 books:  Last Summer we read over 100 books and I’m hoping this year we’ll do the same.  We’ve been reading more chapter books than picture books so I’m not sure.
    • Explore the Queen City:  I’ve been in Charlotte for over a decade and still I go to my same old stomping grounds and favorite neighborhoods.  This Summer our goal is to venture out and explore new places and parts of our beloved city that we haven’t.

  • Hail Merry® Merry Bites™

Disclosure: I received this product for free from Moms Meet, May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer.  As a Moms Meet blogger, I agreed to use this product and post my honest opinion on my blog.  The opinions in this post are my own.

Whether for myself or my kids, I am always on the hunt for nutritious snacks that are not only good for us, but tasty too.  Lat month Moms Meet asked if I would be interested in trying Hail Merry’s Merry Bites.  And after reading about Hail Merry’s Merry Bites and doing a little research to see what other moms were saying about them, I said yes.  My package arrived about two weeks ago and I’m so glad that I decided to give them a try.  Keep scrolling to find see the adorable package they sent me as well as my first impression and unboxing video!

    What I Received

Before I get into exactly what in my package, can we take a moment to admire how pretty the Hail Merry tin is?  How adorable is this tin?  The lid features the Hail Merry Queen surrounded by stars and “Raw Love” underneath while the side of the actual tin is decorated with the words “Vegan,” “Raw,” and “Gluten-Free” all separate by cute little blue hears.  And the use of our nation’s patriotic colors only adds to the cuteness factor.  I think this is probably the cutest package I’ve “ever received from a sponsor.  Other companies should definitely take note.

Nestled inside of this cute tin were the following:

    • 1 Hail Merry fitted baseball cap
    • 1 Hail Merry poncho style t-shirt
    • 1 Caramel Sea Salt Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Pure Vanilla Macaroon Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Lemon Macaroon Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Salted Brownie Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Dark Chocolate Macaroon Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Merry Bites sample pack
    • 1 Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Merry Bites full-size sample
    • 1 Hail Merry information pamphlet
    • 2 Hail Merry roller durby girl temporary tattoos
    • 2 Hail Merry Merry Bites coupons

    What I Liked

What liked right away about the Merry Bites was that they were gluten-free, vegan and made from 100% plant-based ingredients.  There weren’t any artificial preservatives, high fructose corn syrup or other not so healthy ingredients.  Merry Bites are certified vegan, C.L.E.A.N., gluten-free, peanut-free (they contain almonds though), paleo-friendly and Non-GMO verified.  In the spirit of full disclosure Moo nor JJ could try these because they are allergic to almonds in addition to peanuts.  However, if they weren’t this is exactly the snack I’d purchase for them.

I enjoyed that the Merry Bites came in six different flavor varities: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Caramel Sea Salt, Salted Brownie, Pure Vanilla Macaroon, Lemon Macaroon, and Dark Chocolate Macaroon.  Out of all six flavors my absolute favorites were the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Dark Chocolate Macaroon and Caramel Sea Salt.  I don’t think you can wrong with those flavors if you’re looking to just taste test Merry Bites for yourself.  The shredded coconut and coconut oil made these so moist and almost melt in your mouth soft, chewy and the maple syrup along with the vanilla add just the right amount of sweetness.

I was definitely bummed when all of my Merry Bites were gone. Thankfully, they threw in some coupons for some more.  I can’t wait to scurry to my local Whole Foods or Fresh Market to pick up some.  I’ve already raved about how much I liked the packaging.  Seriously they had everything packed away so neatly.  And the t-shirt was wrapped in a cute ribbon that I will be repurposing as a hair ribbon for my puff. #NaturalHairLife  Check out my First Impression and Unboxing video below to see all of my reactions to the different flavors.

Visit HailMerry.com/where-to-buy to find out if a grocer near you sells Merry Bites.  Trust me you want regret trying them.  If you don’t have stores near you that sell these be sure to put in a request.  You can also keep up with Hail Merry and any future product releases by giving them a like on Facebook, following them on Twitter or following them on Instagram.

And if you do get a chance to try Merry Bites or any of the other Hail Merry products-Miracle Tarts and Mini Miracle Tarts-feel to stop by and let me know how you liked them.

What is your favorite healthy snack?

  • Thankful Thursday

    Thankful Thursday

Happy Thankful Thursday!  It’s that time again.  Let’s open those gratitude journals and reflect on all of the positive and wonderful things that happened this past week.  And if you don’t keep a gratitude journal, I definitely recommend that you start one because it’s so uplifting and humbling to be able to look back and recognize all of the things you have to be thankful for.  Things that you may have even taken for granted just last week.

Life is one of those things that I took for granted, but am truly thankful for.  This past week has not been without its tragedies.  There was the shooting in at Pulse in Orlando, parents having to mourn the death of their toddler after he was attacked and killed by an alligator while on vacation, and a teenager was murdered (three others were injured)  in a drive-by shooting while attending a vigil for her friends who had drowned. Listen y’all, I don’t want to be walking here talking about these are the last days, but with so much death in the air back-to-back, it has made me appreciate each day that I’ve woken up with my family much more.

While I know that tomorrow is not promised to any of us, I’d be remissed if I didn’t admit that there is still a lot of living I want to do.  I want to see my children graduate, get married and have my grandkids.  I want to travel overseas.  I want to make more of a difference in the world around me.  It seems selfish to ask God for more time to allow me to do these things when so many other people’s lives have been cut short.

Still I’m praying that He will and that in the meanwhile, He continue to teach me how to live each day like it’s last.  I’m praying that He will help me to become more purposefully in how I spend my days.  I want to focus more on making memories with my family, more on giving back to others and more on strengthening my spiritual self.

    ThankfulThursday June 16th

This week I’m also thankful that we’ve had an awesome first week of Summer Break!  It feels amazing to sleep-in and not have to turn off four alarms, rush through breakfast and then rush out the door.  And while our Summer Break just started, I can’t help realize how NOT far off August is.  There are so many experiences I want to cram into these peaceful and carefree days.  A part of me leaning towards attempting to homeschool because I don’t want to cram anything.  I want the flexibility of being able to take my time without any outside restraints.  Thus, this is my love-hate relationship with school.

Last night the kids were running around the living room laughing and being a bit rambunctious as kids often are.  My little guy fell onto one of the coffee tables and the corner caught him by his front teeth.  Talk about a heart-stopping moment.  At first, I thought it had gotten his eye and I was preparing to see the worst when he turned around.  But he had hit his front top teeth.

I am so thankful that he was okay.  His teeth weren’t knocked loose, but he did have some wood in from his teeth had chipped away a little dent in the table due the impact force.  The angels were looking out because I seriously don’t know how he didn’t even chip a tooth.  Just the sound that came after his fall made me cringe.  Needless to say I’ve reinstated a no running policy.

I’m thankful that Moo’s love for reading continues to grow by the day.  We have checked out 72 books from our local libraries this week with more books on hold!  She’s even requested to start a Mommy & Me Booktube channel on YouTube.  I know that whether or not she goes back to traditional school or we decide to homeschool, her reading skills are going to be through the roof.  I love that I’m raising well-read children and am exposing them to a variety of different genres, authors, characters and adventures.

Lastly, I’m thankful that we didn’t have to throw out any of our food yesterday.  There were major power outages throughout the Queen City yesterday.  I’m talking about traffic lights not working, groceries shut down because of no power and our place wasn’t without power for three hours.  We kept the frig and freezer closed the entire time and thankful once the power came back on we checked and the ice in the freezer hadn’t even melted.  Everything was still nice and cold.

What made your gratitude list this week?  Leave me a comment below.

  • Thankful Thursday

    Thankful Thursday

Do you know what today is?  I will give you a hint.  It’s not my anniversary.  It’s the last day of school!!  I wish there was a confetti button.  I am so excited that Summer Break is officially here.  In fact, it’s the first thing that I’d like to give thanks for in today’s Thankful Thursday post.

As I mentioned in my June Recently post, I am thankful that we can now sleep in and I can turn off all four of my morning alarms.  I’m thankful that when we do activities during that day on Monday through Friday, Moo won’t be or feel left out because she won’t be stuck in the classroom.  I’m grateful that our schedule is flexible again.  If I want to stay an extra at Target in the afternoon I can without worrying about not being able to get Moo from school on time.  I almost feel like doing cartwheels right now.

    ThankfulThursday June 9th

However, as excited as we all are about tomorrow being the first official day of Summer Break, we are a little sad.  This afternoon I went to enjoy lunch with Moo in her classroom for the last day of school.  We watched movies with her classmates, she told me how she ended the school year with the highest reading level in the class and she exchanged numbers with her best friend.  Her teacher has been raving about her all school year and I knew it was no secret that Moo was the class pet.

Still when we went to leave early, I wasn’t expecting her teacher to burst into tears over the sadness of losing her star pupil.  And I wasn’t prepared to start tearing up right along with her.  This school year I am most thankful that Moo had a teacher who not only enjoyed being a teacher, but she genuinely loved and cared about her students.   While she accredited so much of Moo’s success and smarts to me being an involved parent at home, I accredit a good deal of Moo’s successful first grade year to her having a teacher who loved and nurtured her.  It was through and with her teacher’s love that my kid really thrived and flourished.

While there were things I didn’t like about Moo’s new school this year, her teacher isn’t one of them.  She will forever be a part of our village and I plan on emailing her frequently to keep her updated on Moo’s progress.  A part of me is hoping that she’ll end up being JJ’s teacher one day.  Here’s to all the teachers out there who take our children under their wings and fight for them just as hard as we, their parents, do!

I’m thankful that our library was able to workout the issue with their book supplier and approved all of my suggested book purchases.  We read a lot in the YUMMommy household.  Therefore, going to the library is one of our favorite pastimes.  Recently, I noticed that our library was a little low on books featuring main characters of color- African American, Hispanic, etc- and suggested some books like Tia and Tamera Mowry’s Twintution series and Jacqueline Jules’ Sofia Martinez series.  I was super excited when I received a message from our librarian that supplier issue was solved and our book requests were ordered.

There are diverse books out there.  We just have to start seeking them out and supporting the writers who are writing them.  I’ve made it my business to increase the number of books by minority authors- not just Blacks- that I purchase for my Kindle each year.  In doing so I’ve gone beyond reading just my favorite authors and have discovered some new faves.  I’m grateful this and for the opportunity to support fellow writers and give them encouragement to keep on writing because I’m reading and supporting their works.

Lastly, I’m grateful that our weather seems to have gotten its act together.  So far this week has been lovely with nice hot temps and only a few light showers.  I hope that our summer will be a balance of getting just the amount of rain we need without us going into the drought level and having water restrictions.

What are you most thankful for this week?

  • Recently June: What I’m Anticipating, Celebrating, Marveling,Planning & Creating

Who wants to play a game of Catch Up?  Now that I’m officially back from my blogging hiatus, I thought a Recently post would be the best way to get y’all up to speed with what’s been going with the YUMMommy family.  Also, let me know if you’re loving the new blog layout.  This was the layout I wanted from the started, but couldn’t seem to find one with that allowed me to have the level of customization that I wanted until I checked out Creative Market.  If you’re looking for blog templates, graphics, fonts, etc definitely check them out.  Lots of vendors and great quality products.

    Anticipating

Summer Break has been on my mind since Christmas!  Don’t get me wrong, I love that this school year has been a great one for Moo compared to last year.  She’s made awesome friends and had a great teacher.  However, I’ve been anticipating the days when I can sleep in, the nights we can stay up late watching movies other than Fridays and Saturdays and being able to do more activities as a family.  Summer we ready!

    Celebrating

My little guy turned five last month!  I’m still trying to wrap my head around it all.  Life should come with a slow motion button.  I was looking at pictures of him from last year and reflecting on all the ways he’s grown.  Motherhood is bittersweet y’all.  On one hand I’m so proud of how independent the kids are getting, but on the other hand there’s this fear and sadness I have as they get closer and closer to leaving the nest.

    Marveling

If you follow me on Instagram you know that we’re growing a balcony garden.  I’ve always believed that growing things is just something that in my blood.  My mom has quite the green thumb.  She’s had houseplants since I can remember- ferns, African violets, peace lilies, etc.  She even managed to grow a patch of gourds and a sunflower one summer without even trying to.

My siblings and I used to help out our great-uncle in his garden when I was in middle school.  During the summer we’d weed and water his small veggie garden.  Then in the early fall we’d shell peas and shuck corn on his front porch while my mom cut up greens.  My grandparents were sharecroppers.  I’ve listened many days as my mom and her sisters told story about their lives growing up on their farm.

I said all that to say that I love our garden and how growing it has helped me to feel more connected to my roots.  I love how it’s provided another avenue for us to bond as a family and a way to teach Moo and JJ the value of caring for something as well as putting in hard work and effort.

    Planning

I don’t want to spend all summer sleeping in.  Summers are meant for adventures.  For the last few weeks I’ve been working on our Summer Bucket List that I’ll be posting next week.  We’re planning on making some great memories this summer.  Here’s to lots of laughs, adventures and fun times.

    Creating

My creative juices have been flowing.  I’m taking advantage of this and finishing up my novels.  I have two wonderful writing partners/accountability partners.  It feels good to be putting pen to paper and letting my characters lead me again.

I’ve also pulled my crochet hooks back out.  The middle panel of Moo’s Eiffel Tower Paris blanket is almost done.  I’m probably more excited about this than she is because this is my first time crocheting a graphghan blanket.  Plus I designed the pattern myself.  Crochet patterns are pretty simple to make.  All you need is PicMonkey, some royalty-free graphics and crochet pattern maker app.

Up next on my graghghan list is a Waddles from Gravity Falls inspired blanket for my sister and an Angry Birds inspired graphghan for JJ.

What have you been up to recently?  Is your family looking forward to Summer Break?

  • Thankful Thursday

    Thankful Thursday

Can I just start off this Thankful Thursday post by saying that I’ve missed you guys?!  God knows I have missed you all and blogging.  I’m sure many of you noticed that I took a month long hiatus from YUMMommy, both the blog and my social media channels.  It wasn’t planned or anything, but just something that kind of happened.  One day I just woke up and decided not to blog.  Then before long one day turned into three and three turned into a week, etc.

It wasn’t that I didn’t want to blog because I love sharing with y’all.  This blog has given me a sense of community and is like my safe haven.  I’ve made some incredible connections thanks to starting YUMMommy.  I don’t want to drag this out, but I was just in a place of feeling overwhelmed.  There were so many balls up in the air and I felt like I didn’t have enough hands to manage everything.

    ThankfulThursday June 3rd(2)

So I took a breather.  It pays to hit the pause button from time to time to prevent ourselves from crashing and burning.  I have lots to share like our balcony gardening journey, where we are with the new house, and what’s been going on with the kids.  I’m thankful to be back in the blogging saddle.

Summer Break is matter of days away and I couldn’t be more grateful.  Somewhere around Spring Break the struggle of getting up in the mornings and out the house on time got realer!  Moo is the only morning person here and is awake by 8 AM everyday without fail.  I’m grateful for this there have been more than a few days when I’ve slept through my THREE alarms.   Come on last day of school!

This week I’m also giving thanks to the Mr’s new work schedule.  He’s home a lot more and we’re able to enjoy dinner as a family and do more family activities.  The kids love it because they don’t just see him passing anymore.  He can come to park with us or attend school performances.  I’m so grateful that he can be apart of more and gets to experience more activities with us as we continue making memories.

    ThankfulThursday June 3rd

I’m most thankful that we are no longer a single car family.  Yes, we finally got a second car!  It’s been a huge blessing.  I’m so grateful that God put this in the cards for us because having one car with two kids and living in the city was not ideal for our family and everything that we have going on.  I won’t ever take having multiple cars for granted ever again that’s for sure.

What are you giving thanks for this week?

    April 52 Books

It’s a wrap!  Month four of the 52 Books In 2016 Reading Challenge is under our belts.  We hit the ground running this month to scratch off more books from our TBR list.   We ended April with a total of 49 books read for the month.  We read roughly 1.5 books a day.  Last month I choose to read the kids one short picture book each night.  In addition to the picture book I also read them a bit of their chosen chapter book for the week.

The thing I’m loving most about this 52 Books In 2016 Reading Challenge is that not only have the kids love for reading grown, but Moo’s interest in reading chapter books has grown.  She’s also reading well above her grade level in school.  It’s been amazing to witness her growth and to watch her develop a deep appreciation for certain authors and characters.  It takes me back to when I fell in love with my favorite authors and characters reading series like Harry Potter, The Women’s Murder Club, Alex Cross, Twilight and most recently the Crossfire series.

Right now JJ is still obsessed with any books that have to deal with Thomas the Tank Engine or trains period, but I can’t wait until he starts expanding his horizons.  Check out all the books we read in April, discover which ones were our favorites and what we’re reading this month below.  Also don’t forget to check out our March recap if you missed it.

Hamster Princess: Harriet the Invincible by Ursula Vernon

If you haven’t already figured it out from title, Harriet is a hamster and she had of the burden of being born a princess.  This book is very much like the hamster version of Sleeping Beauty, but with a few twists.  For starters Harriet doesn’t want to be a princess.  She’s not a girly girl.  Instead of practicing her ball room dancing, she’d rather be out slaying dragons and other monsters.   I have to admit that I picked this book up for Moo at first because she loves all things princess, but I quickly fell in love with this book and have already started on book 2.

Stuck In The Mud by Shana Corey

No shocker here that JJ’s favorite book was one based on his favorite Thomas & Friends movie, Hero of the Rails.  Thomas saves the day again when he helps Hiro avoid going to the Scrap Yard despite sneaky Spencer’s attempts to have Hiro scraped.  Thomas & Friends lovers are sure to love this quick and easy read.

Bad Kitty School Daze by Nick Bruel

Also not a shocker is Moo’s pick of Bad Kitty School Daze as her favorite read.  She’s obsessed with the Bad Kitty series.  I think we’ve officially read all but one.  She wants to create her own book series now.  Thanks Nick Bruel for inspiring my daughter and helping her to love reading even more!

Anyways, Kitty and Puppy are off to obedience school to learn how to be better siblings to each other.  Think of Kitty as the bossy, spoiled older sister who’s used to being the only child.  Then along comes Puppy, the annoyingly always happy, playful and sometimes mischievous little brother.   Will obedience school break them or will they break obedience school?  Either way your little reader (and you) will be in for a good read and some good laughs!

    What We’re Reading This Month

    1

Hamster Princess: Of Mice and Magic by Ursula Vernon

Harriet the hamster princess is back again.  This time she has to break the curse of the twelve dancing mice princesses or risk losing her family’s fortune and legacy forever.  We’ve already started this book and it’s just as good as the first one.  I hope there will be more books added to this series.

    2

Death at a Fixer Upper by Sarah T. Hobart

Sam Turner is real estate agent who can’t seem to keep a client because they always end up turning up dead.  I’m this book as part of my Random House Mystery Chat Pack.  While I do enjoy romances, mysteries are my first love when it comes to books.  It’s been great being part of the #RHMysteryPack crew.  This book sounds like it’s a fun read.  Besides Sam’s clients turning up dead, her ex comes back into the picture and there’s a romance.  So it looks like I haven’t completely left the romance genre behind, but it is nice getting exposed to some other mysteries writers besides my faves.

We’re up to a total of 203 books read for the year!  Originally, our goal was to read 150 books as a family.   We met that goal last month and I upped our goal to 300-500 books for the year.  I don’t think we’ll have any issues with hitting 300 books and will probably surpass 500 before the year is out.

What books should we add to our Summer TBR list?

    Thankful Thursday

Happy Thankful Thursday!  I’m so grateful to be back on the blogging wagon.  I took a brief blogging break to move YUMMommy from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress.  I’d said more than once that I wasn’t interested in moving my blog, but then I got frustrated with not being able to add things and customize my site the way I wanted to without having to know how to code.  Don’t get me wrong, I know a little HTML.

However it’s so much easier being able to just add a plugin that does all the hard work instead.  I don’t mind working hard, but sometimes working hard means working hard at working smarter.  I still have a few tweaks and changes to make, but for the most part I am happy that I made the switch.  Being the DIYer that I decided to move everything over myself and that was an experience.  I’m thankful for all for great customer service, the WordPress forum and Google because without these resources I would have had to move each post over manually.

Spring Break is over.  While some parents rejoice about being able to send their children back to school, I am that 1-5% of parents who dread having to give up sleeping in.  I am NOT a morning person.  JJ is NOT a morning person.  The struggle has been real to get up every morning after 10 straight days of sleeping in.  Also, we miss the freedom of being able to decide what we want to do for the day as a family and not rush about having to pick so and so up from school.  This is exactly why I’m thankful that Summer Break is right corner!

The kids have given me a list of some of the fun (and educational) places they would like to visit once school lets out.  I have to admit that I’m excited to see how many of these field trips we’ll mark off our list.  As a mom, I’m proud of the fact that they purposefully picked out some of the places because they want to learn.  I don’t know what I’ve done to instill a natural love of learning into my kids, but I’m kind of patting myself on the back.  They could have just as easily have requested to hang out by the pool and watch TV all summer (not that they have a chance of this happening).  The best part is that my mom, niece and sister will be tagging along on some of these field trips!

Faith is a refusal to panic.

    ~ D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

There have been some major changes going on behind the scenes in my personal life.  I’m thankful that through it all my faith has kept me strong and kept me from freaking out.  Life is full of curve balls, but you don’t have to let those curve balls derail you.  We are all stronger than we think.  Regardless of our religions I truly believe that we can all take comfort in your faith when things don’t go as planned or unexpected surprises arrive.

What are you thankful for this week?
