  • Interior Decorating

Growing up we didn’t have a lot. However, that didn’t stop my mom from making sure our house looked good. I was amazed at her sense of style.  I admired the fact that she undertook the task of really putting an effort into interior decorating on top of raising five children and working two (sometimes three) jobs.
And even more amazing was the fact that she spent little or no money for everything she did!  She would get home decorating magazines from the public library or buy them when they were on sale.  Then she would sit down go through each and rip out pages of things she liked. It could be a wall color from one magazine and a table from another.
She’d rip and clip pictures and piece together looks for each room.  She was creating her own idea book.  I remember her taking that idea book and going to flea markets, thrift stores and home improvement stores looking for pieces that we were similar to those in her idea book.  I have to admit that she was the master at curbside finds.
For me that passion for interior decorating comes from my mom.  And now that we’re house hunting, I’ve found myself creating idea books for how I want each room to look in our new home.  I’ve even been able to style our current rental using curbside and Internet finds and freebies.  You’d be amazed at what a little sand paper, spray paint and new hardware can do for furniture.
Are you wanting to remodel or redecorate?  Could the kitchen use a little sprucing up?  Don’t be afraid. Put together your idea book and go from there.
Have you ever tried your hand at interior decorating?  Did you create an idea book?

  • Holiday Greetings By Shutterfly

Yay, December is finally upon us!  And what time is it?  Holiday greetings time!!  Besides all the birthday celebrations that will be going this month, this is one of the things I look forward to the most during December.
And I have to admit that I’ve completely fallen in love with Shutterfly.  My Valentine’s Day cards were a huge hit this past February.  I was very impressed with the design and quality of the cards I ordered.  So of course, it only makes sense that I would go back to them and check out their amazing selection of Christmas cards.
Sending out Christmas Cards has been a holiday tradition for me since I was about 10.  I would always ask me mom to get a box of cards.  Then I would have her sign the insides. (Her handwriting is so beautiful!!) Next, I would sit down with her address book, a roll of stamps, address labels and address each card to a family member or close family friend.
Something about sending a little holiday cheer to the people closest and dearest to our hearts just made me good.  Nothing’s changed today either.  If anything, I especially like reaching out to my loved one’s who I know are having a difficult time during this part of the year.  And I’m really looking forward to sending out cards again this year.  Here are my top five Christmas card design picks from Shutterfly:
    Heart to Heart

    Classically Yours

    Snowman Greetings

    Wrapped Ribbon

    Picture Tree

And while I was over there, I also spied this cute little invitation for JJ’s first birthday party coming up next year.  You all know that I like to stay a few steps ahead in the planning process with kids.
    Hear Me Roar

So, which Christmas card design should I choose? What do you think about the invitation?

  • Because of You

Three years and nine months ago, my life was kind of a mess.  I wasn’t entirely happy with the person I had let myself become.  To say that I felt lost and unloved would be an understatement.
But then almost $20 and few double pink lines helped me to turn my life around.  Moo, you saved my life!  You gave me a reason to rediscover the better person I knew I could and wanted to be.  It’s because of you that I’ve learned how to appreciate the simple joys and treasures of life again.
It’s because of you that I didn’t give up.  It’s because of you that I’ve become somewhat of a morning person now. (I’m getting better.)  Thanks to you, I spend a little bit more time at the park and get a little bit more exercise.
It’s because of you that I’m finally going hard after my dreams.
Words can’t and could never fully describe the love and thankfulness I have for you.  But always remember that each day I get better and better is because of
    YOU!!
    Happy Birthday!!
    I love you!

  • Christmas Shopping Plum District Style

It’s crunch time in terms of finishing up my Christmas shopping.  I still have a few people to cross off my list.  And while the Black Friday madness is behind us, I still don’t feel like searching store aisles for presents my family doesn’t already have.  We all live pretty much in the same region so our Walmarts, Targerts, and malls carry the same merchandise.
Therefore, nine times out of ten they’ve already seen the gift that I’m giving them.  Or they’ve probably purchased that same gift for me.  So, this year I’m Christmas shopping Plum District-Charlotte style.  I’ve been checking the site out on daily basis to stay up to date on all the new deals that come available and so far I’ve scored some sweet beauty products from Bloom (stocking stuffers) and a magazine subscription deal that I used for my husband’s birthday.
Anyways, JJ’s going to be 7 months by the time Christmas gets here and he’s already showing quite an interest in toys.  So, I was thinking that the $25 for $50 Worth of Plush Adorable Rockers from Rockabye[.com] would be a great deal to pick for him.

How cute is that Baseball Glove rocker?!!  I love it.  Since, my mom is always complaining about the lack of pictures she has of the grandkids, I thought that the $39 for 16×20 Chic Canvas Photo ($99 value) would be a great gift and very worth the investment.  Canvas photos are much better than photos we put in picture books because you hang them on the wall and can see them daily without having to hunt down a book.  Nothing mention, they’re just an unspoken elegance about canvas photos, especially when they’re framed nicely.
And my sisters and I are all into natural beauty products.  Therefore, I’m eyeballing the $15 for $35 Worth of Holistic Lani B Lip Care Products and the $30 for $60 Worth of Brown Bag Botanicals Skin Care Products.

So, if you’re like me and you’re looking to get gifts for your family and friends that really truly surprise them and for an amazing price, I HIGHLY recommend that you scoot on over to Plum District-Charlotte and check out the great deals they have going.  Check out their $25 for $50 Deals. There’s only 8 more hours to scoop those up before they’re gone!

  • iPhone on the Brain

I have to admit that I do spend a great deal of time of my cell phone.  I’m texting to keep up to date with my girlfriends from college, sending emails when I’m away from the house and adding events to my calendar.  And if that isn’t enough, my phone currently serves as my personal digital camera.  While, I do love my phone for the most part, the one thing that really annoys me is all the unwanted apps that are on it.
Seriously, this phone would be perfect but there are apps on there that I don’t and have no interest in using but can’t be removed.  And this sucks big time because it’s eating up my phone memory and prohibiting me from being able to download apps that I really want and will use.  So, I’ve been thinking that it might be time to switch over to an iPhone.  It seems to be getting some good reviews.
I just a phone that will allow me to choose what I do and don’t want  on it.  Too much good money is paid on cell phones themselves and cell phone bills to not be able to have the option of choosing something so simple as what apps I want on my phone.  So, I’m going to search buy iPhone4 San Francisco ( heard the West coast has some good deals) or something along those lines to see what kind of prices I can find.
    Do you have an iPhone?

  • Saved By The Shirts

Men are always talking about how complicated we as women are.  However, I’ve found that when it comes to holiday shopping, it’s the men who are the most difficult to shop for.  Do you buy them something for the car?  Or do you get them a new accessory for their video game?
And if you’re like me, you don’t really believe in giving gift cards because it seems too impersonal.  Unfortunately, I sunk to that level of gift card giving one year with my husband.  I had struck out earlier that year with not so good gifts for our anniversary, Valentine’s Day and his birthday.  Who knew he would be so picky when it came to gifts?  Whoever, it was, they really left me out of the loop.
I purchased a chair warmer for his car only to never have it get used.  I got him gourmet chocolates before only to find out that he doesn’t like chocolate all too much because it breaks him out.  So, it was gift card to the rescue that Christmas.  However, last Christmas I hit the jack pot when I got him two graphic tees.
If I had known all along that a few guys shirts would have put such a lovely smile on his face, I would have been started getting them for him.  So, there will be no running around going crazy over what to buy this year.  I’m saved by the shirts from buying another gift card this year. Can you say excited?!
So is your guy hard to shop for?

  • Thanksgiving Recap

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!  I know that I did.  It got to a rocky start because my mom’s car broke down the night before Thanksgiving Eve.  It was just a whole lot of stress that I didn’t really need or want.  Anyways, the situation got worked out.
I ended up cooking a full Thanksgiving dinner that consisted of a small turkey (lemon & herbs seasoning), mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, corn bread, stuffing, apple pie and a sweet potato pie complete with a scratch made crust.  Let me just say that my first attempt at making a pie crust did not turn out too well.  I think that I didn’t put enough flour in it.
Thankfully, my second attempt was a success.  Moo enjoyed playing in the flour and kneading the dough.  She’s really been taking an interest in helping me cook.  I’m thinking about getting a little step stool and apron for her.
My brother and baby sister spent the night Thanksgiving Eve.  We had a blast catching up and telling funny stories while I finished the pies and wrapped up Christmas presents for the kids.  It had been three months since I’d seen my brother and one month since I last saw my sister.  We do enjoy being spread out in different cities but we miss being in each other’s company too.
Thanksgiving day was fun.  We went to my younger sister and her husband’s apartment for dinner.  Moo was beyond happy to see her Grandma and my niece.  JJ wasn’t too thrilled to be away from his bouncer seat.  Not to mention, with all his teething, he just wasn’t having it.
We made back home in time to see the Mr off to work.  I hated that he had to go but it’s life.  That’s the one thing I don’t miss about working in retail. Working on the holidays.  And I’m looking forward to the day when my husband won’t have to either.
I didn’t even bother going out for Black Friday.  It’s not what it’s cracked up to be.  I can personally say that half stuff that was on sale will be cheaper after Christmas or after New Year’s.  When I worked in retail I loved being able to give my family and friends a heads up on what stuff to wait on.  I think that a lot of people just blow Black Friday out of portion.
You had grown people behaving like rabid animals for some video games, toys and clothing.  That to me is just plain disgusting.  Especially, when some of those people know they can’t afford any of the stuff they got and will end up returning or pawning it.
Anyways, I’m glad that my family and I are able to keep the holidays in perspective.  I’m looking forward to Christmas and being with my loved ones again.
    How was your Thanksgiving?
